- CHSA continues to focus on trail improvements during the off-season. We finished the drainage work on Dead River Run and Skunk Brook Trail with extensive mulching and seeding. A new bridge and culverts are also in place on those trails. Skiers may notice the creative stonework along the trailsides where massive boulders unearthed during the excavating have been artfully placed.
A logging operation will be taking place to the east of our trail network, and log trucks will be exiting via Stagecoach Road. Skiers will note large, orange "Logging Operation" signs at trail intersections with Stagecoach Road. CHSA has taken steps to minimize the impact on skiing by creating a temporary trail re-route to help skiers bypass Stagecoach Road. Look for "Keitoo's Kut-off" departing from Gullywhumper and crossing Stagecoach Road to "The Snake" if you want to reach Bear Scat Draw and/or Dead River Run.
Finally, the northern end of Gullywhumper intersecting Pond Road has been (we hope temporarily) discontinued due to a landowner request, so we have removed this section of the Gullywhumper from the trail map. Skiers wanting to access the southern end of the trail network should use Gullyjumper to reach the southern end of Gullywhumper and points south.
Many hands pitched in over the last two weeks to help clear the trails of massive amounts of debri and blowdowns resulting from a very destructive early December storm. As a result, we are planning to open for skiing as of Saturday, December 26th! See you on the trails and CHSA wishes you very Happy Holidays!!

- 2010 Camel's Hump Challenge News!
The leaves are (mostly) on the ground, the top of the Hump is white, and it is time to start thinking about this year's 'Round the Hump event! For those who participated in previous Challenges, we hope you will join us again, and for those who have not yet been on this one-of- a-kind back country ski tour, we hope to see you this winter. The Camel's Hump Challenge is the only opportunity to ski around Camel's Hump with group support and the permission of the State. As always, we are holding this event in partnership with the Vermont Alzheimer's Association and all proceeds will help support their work.
The date for this year's Camel's Hump Challenge will be February 7th, 2010, with an alternative rain/weather date of February 14th. The minimum fundraising amount is $125.00, which will benefit the Vermont Alzheimer's Association. We are again offering incentives for those who raise more than the minimum this year. While we are still nailing down the details on some great gear, you can count on a pair of Black Diamond skis, headlamps, packs, and other stuff you need. We'll have more details about that in the next few weeks, so get out and start fundraising!
We have also given our site a facelift and have purchased our very own domain name, so our site is easier to find and easier to use. Check it out: www.camelshumpchallenge.com. You can pre-register, download the fundraising and liability forms, check out a photo gallery from previous events, and get other general information about the event. We also added a forum, so take a minute to log in and join a discussion. If there is a topic that is not yet on the forum, please let us know and we can add it- it doesn't have to do with the Challenge specifically- we envision an online place for backcountry enthusiasts to share information about anything and everything! We plan to offer a Camel's Hump Challenge shirt again this year, so keep an eye out for it in the local outdoor gear stores after Thanksgiving. They make great Christmas presents and support a great cause so pick up a few!
Finally, we have one request from everyone. We are always working to expand our skier base, and we would like to hear from anybody who has a friend who might enjoy this event. Just send us their name and email, and we will let them know about the Challenge. As always, we promise not to share, sell, or otherwise use those email addresses for anything other than information about the Camel's Hump Challenge.
We hope this letter finds you well, and we look forward to seeing you in February. If you have any questions or suggestions, please feel free to reply to this email address.
Think snow!
